Distribution:  North America: USA.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 3-3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 6-7. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: three dorsal spines; higher mean scale counts; lateral series 46 vs. 42-44, rows above lateral line 9; caudal peduncle rows 33; bar caudal markings; longer postorbital length; ventrolateral caudal peduncle stripe absent; larger eye mean 26% HL; narrower interorbital space mean 92.9%; caudal bar present rather than two caudal spots; smaller orbit mean 26% HL; longer postorbit mean 16% SL; long caudal bar or indistinct caudal markings (Ref. 133071).
