Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Malacosteinae
Max. size:  18.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 25 - 800 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: one record at 30°45'40"N, 25°47'W. Western Atlantic: between 35°and 6°N, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea; one record 34°S, 49°W (Ref. 6684). Indian Ocean: at 15°S. Western Pacific: north of western New Guinea, record at 22°N 172°E. Eastern Central Pacific: Hawaiian Islands.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 23-23; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 27-27. Series of luminous dots running backward from area between eye and postorbital luminous organ; barbel ending in a poorly defined, slightly thickened terminal part (Ref. 13608).
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 27000). Also Ref. 58302.
