Distribution:  South America: Rio Amazonas and Rio Orinoco.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 10-10; Vertebrae: 44-46. The location of the dorsal fin base distinctly anterior to the vertical through the anal fin origin distinguishes this species from all ctenoluciids except B. lucius and B. cuvieri. From B. lucius it can be distinguished by the discrete black spot on the basal portions of the caudal fin rays. From B. cuvieri it can be distinguished on the basis of scale counts.
