Family:  Scaridae (Parrotfishes), subfamily: Scarinae
Max. size:  50 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range - 5 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: known only from Natal (South Africa), Zanzibar (Tanzania), Madagascar, and Mauritius, but probably more widespread.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Found around deep rocky reefs up to a depth of at least 30 m (Ref. 9710). Solitary or in small groups (Ref. 9710). Also caught with nets and other kinds of artisanal gear. Mainly sold fresh.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 16 September 2009 Ref. (130435)
