Family:  Carapidae (Pearlfishes), subfamily: Carapinae
Max. size:  17 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 120 - 3250 m
Distribution:  North to Central Eastern Atlantic: From North Spain to equator; incl. Mediterranean eartsward to Ionian Sea (Ref. 4741).
Diagnosis:  Eel-like, shallow body depth; 1 to several symphyseal fangs on dentary and premaxilla; lacking cardiform teeth, pelvic fins, and swim bladder rocker bone; a patch of ridges posteriorly on the ventral surface of the swim bladder (Ref. 34024). Pigmented eye diameter less than 15% head length (Ref. 34024).
Biology:  Uncommon species (Ref. 34024). Adults are benthic, juveniles are free-swimming (Ref. 6491). Depth range reported in Ref. 57178 taken from Ref. 040919.
