Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-9; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 8-8. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: complete cephalic sensory-canal pore system (Group I) and dorsal/anal fin-ray formula 9/8. (of the 30 described species of Eviota in Group I, 16 species have this dorsal/anal fin-ray formula); have a distinct dark pigment on the pectoral-fin base (the pectoral-fin base is heavily peppered with small black dots and the pigmentation on the pectoral-fin base is confluent with pigment over the breast); fifth pelvic-fin ray is absent or rudimentary; pectoral-fin rays 16-18, usually 16 (Ref. 96083). |
Collected from a surge channel cut well back into the shore. Most of the other collections were taken from rocky and coral areas in waters less than 10 m (Ref. 96083). |
