Family:  Pentanchidae (Deepwater catsharks)
Max. size:  40 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine
Distribution:  Northwestern Pacific: Japan to Taiwan (Ref. 127969). Possibly Vietnam and Malaysia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 0-0; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 0-0. Obscure saddle markings on body and precaudal tail, and with dark markings on the terminal and hypural caudal-fin lobes (Ref. 11146).
Biology:  A little-known, but very common shark, found in deep water near the bottom (Ref. 11146). Maximum length of at least 40 cm TL, probably reaching 50 cm (Ref. 11146).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 29 August 2019 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
