Family:  Serranidae (Sea basses: groupers and fairy basslets)
Max. size:  14.25 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 3 - 45 m
Distribution:  Western Central Atlantic: Haiti, Bahamas, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Florida (USA) and continental western Caribbean. Absent in Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and the Lesser Antilles.
Diagnosis:  About 5 deep blue bars of uneven width; second bar, below dorsal fin, much wider than others (Ref. 26938).
Biology:  A solitary species (Ref. 26340) inhabiting coral reefs (Ref. 9710).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 21 August 2012 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
