This species is distinguished from other southeastern Hypseleotris by the following set of characters: blunt head and lack of dorsal scales up until posteriad as middle of second dorsal fin; absence of pointed median fin tips (present in H. acropinna, H. galii, H. mooloboolaensis); and distinct median fin coloration in mature males: distal portion of fin bearing band of pale orange, shading into thin band of white (Ref. 128732). | |||
