Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; pH range: 5.5
Distribution:  South America: known only from the type locality, small ponds in Bonfim river floodplains, upper Claro drainage, upper ParanĂ¡ river basin in Brazil.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-10; Anal soft rays: 13-14; Vertebrae: 30-30. Distinguished from all congeners by the following unique color patterns: a broad subbasal red stripe on the dorsal fin in males; ventral portion of the head with a black reticulate pattern in females; caudal fin orange on the dorsal and ventral portions, yellow on the middle in females (Ref. 75134). Description: longitudinal series of scales 29-31; transverse series of scales 8. Caudal fin circular (Ref. 75134).
Biology:  Inhabits ponds with clear water, about 1.5 m deep, connected to shallow creeks of about 0.05 m deep (Ref. 75134). Adults stay close to the surface of the ponds, near emerging aquatic plants while a few juveniles occur in shallow creek (Ref. 75134).
