Max. size:  75 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 5 - 65 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: East Africa to the Great Barrier Reef, including the Timor Sea.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 5-5; Dorsal soft rays (total): 28-31; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 26-29. Description: Characterized by bluish grey to olive grey body color, paler on ventral parts; angular, squarish protuberance at front of head in adults; caudal peduncle with pair of bony plates, each with large keel with forward projecting point; greatest depth of body 2.4 (subadults)-3.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Inhabits steep drop-offs of offshore coral reefs or rocky outcrops (Ref. 37792). Feeds on algae and larger zooplankton (Ref. 37792). Solitary or in groups (Ref. 90102). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
