Family:  Serrivomeridae (Sawtooth eels)
Max. size:  65 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 150 - 1000 m
Distribution:  Atlantic and the Mediterranean: Strait of Gibraltar to Cape Verde in the east and USA to 18°N in the west (Ref. 5237); including Bermuda and a record from off the Scotian shelf (Canada) is based on a larval specimen collected in 1978 (Ref. 12204).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 175-199; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 165-192. Blackish-brown in color (Ref. 12204). Pectoral fins small (Ref. 12204).
Biology:  Common depth of juveniles around 650-850 meters while subadult and adults are deeper in the water column from 800-1000 meters; no indication of diel vertical migration in juveniles and adults (Ref. 94792). Feeds on crustaceans (Ref. 12204).
