Family:  Trachipteridae (Ribbonfishes)
Max. size:  220 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; brackish; marine; depth range - 1000 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: South Africa and Reunion. Eastern Indian Ocean: southern Australia. Southwest Pacific: New Zealand. Southwest Atlantic: Brazil and Argentina.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 166-173. Silvery in color except for front of head, interorbital area, dorsal part of upper jaw, and tip of lower jaw which are black (Ref. 2713).
Biology:  Oceanic and mesopelagic (Ref. 7300). Enters estuaries (Ref. 9563). Feeds on pelagic crustaceans (Ref. 27637); fishes, squids, urochordatans, and nematodes (Anisakidae) were found in the stomach of specimens caught off the coasts of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil (Ref. 56498).
