  Etymology of specific epithet  
Named for the Royal Indian Marine Steamer "Investigator" used between 1884 and 1926 to conduct surveys in offshore waters of the Indian coast and adjacent areas and where over 200 different fish species were discovered, including Chelidoperca investigators (P. Psomadakis, pers.comm. 04/2021).
