Comments: Type locality, Northern Territory, Cobourg Peninsula, E. side Coral Bay, NTM S.10016-003 (holotype of Opistognathus verecundus, 5.26 cm SL, male). Known only from the type locality off Cobourg Peninsula, northern Australia, in 5-6 m (Ref. 76827).

Etymology: Opistognathus: Greek, opisthe = behind + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335); to the very elongate upper jaw of the type species of the genus, Opistognathus nigromarginatus (Ref. 128653);  verecundus: Name from Latin 'verecundus' meaning shy or bashful, referring to the burrow-dwelling behavior..

背棘 (总数): 10 - 11; 背的软条 (总数): 14-15; 臀棘 3; 臀鳍软条: 13 - 15; 脊椎骨: 28. This species is distinct with having D X-XI, 14 or 15 (typically XI, 14); upper jaw sexually dimorphic with flexible lamina posteriorly, end of maxilla slightly rounded in females becoming increasingly elongate and scimitar-shaped in adult males; 39-54 oblique scale rows in longitudinal series; 23-26 total gill-rakers on first arch; a single brownish spot, if present, between spines 2-4 of spinous dorsal fin (Ref. 76827).
