Type locality, Northern Territory, Cobourg Peninsula, E. side Coral Bay, NTM S.10016-003 (holotype of Opistognathus verecundus, 5.26 cm SL, male). Known only from the type locality off Cobourg Peninsula, northern Australia, in 5-6 m (Ref. 76827).
