Comments: Known from the Amazon River basin (Ref. 36377). Recorded in Piracicaba river (Ref. 50076). Considered economically important by the Brazilians who have acclimated the originally Amazonian stocks to the conditions of the province in the northeast (Ref. 27188). Established populations introduced in the states of Bahia, Ceará, Espirito Santo, Maranhão, and Piauí (Ref. 126783).

Redescription of Peruvian material in Kullander (1986: 61), with diagnosis, description, distribution, and illustrations. The species is reported from the Rio Orinoco drainage and numerous localities in the Rio Amazonas basin, but apparently several species are confused under the name, and names in the synonymy may represent valid species.
