Comments: Type locality of Gymnogeophagus mekinos, Rio Grande do Sul, rio Piraizinho, on road from Bagé to Dom Pedrito, tributary of rio Negro. It inhabits the río Negro, connected to the lower río Uruguay. Report of its presence in the río Tacuarí / lagoa Mirim drainage is probably based on a study using DNA analysis (Ref. 118066).

পৃষ্ঠীয় কাঁটা (মোট ) : 13 - 15; পৃষ্ঠীয় নরম পাখনা দন্ড (মোট ) : 9 - 11; পায়ূ কাঁটা : 3; পায়ূর নরম পাখনা্তুন্ড: 8 - 10. This species is distinguished from its congeners, except G. gymnogenysgymnogenys by its more elongate body (body depth 34.9-38.3% SL, mean = 36.7 vs. 38.6-44.2 % SL, mean = 40.6 in gymnogenys specimens larger than 6.5 cm SL), and by the continuous iridescent olivaceous coloration of males (vs. clearly demarcated iridescent blue spots on the center of each scale) (Ref. 118066).
