Occurs in Ulungur and Bosten lakes, Erqishi, Tarim and Yili rivers (Ref. 41093) and in the Lake Khanka drainage area (Amur river basin) (Ref. 1739). Known from the provinces of Guangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Hunan and Shanxi and from Shanghai City (Ref. 33786). Has adversely affected Cyprinus pellegrini when it was introduced in Qilu Lake due to competition for food (Ref. 44142). A popular cultured fish, introduced from its native range to other regions in China and has been reported to cause serious disruption (Ref. 45864).
