Type locality of the holotype of Pseudotropheus aurora: 'Malawi, Lake Malawi, probably Likoma Island' (Ref. 117093). Known from Lake Malawi at Likoma Island (Ref. 5684, 6256, 86409, 117093). Populations have been transplanted by exporters of aquarium fishes to Otter Point (Ref. 5684, 6256) and Thumbi West Island (Ref. 5684, 6256, 86409) in Lake Malawi.
