Comments: Found in the Iberian Peninsula (Ref. 119049). Occurs in Rio Jucar near Cuenca; Laguna of Una; river Turia. Threatened due to habitat destruction, pollution, and introductions of exotic predators (Ref. 79582). Exrtirpated in most of the Jucar drainage by the invasion of its strong competitor Pseudochondrostoma polylepis, but survives only in one headwater where a dam prevents peneration of Pseudochondrostoma polylepis (Ref. 59043). Fishery 1989: species subject to commercial fishing (Ref. 79582). Also Ref. 13696, 27763. Status of threat: Critically endangered (Ref. 59043, 119049).

Diagnosed from congeners by having the following characters: blunt snout, rostral cap hidden by upper lip in ventral view; lateral line with 41-50 + 3 scales; body depth 4.4-5.6 times in SL; caudal peduncle depth 1.9-2.2 times in its length; 16-23 gill rakers; and usually 6-5 pharyngeal teeth (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits stretches with swift current. Can survive in still water but needs access to flowing waters to spawn. Spawning occurs on gravel to stone bottom (Ref. 59043).
