Definition of Term

variety
(English) An ambiguous term of classical taxonomy for a heterogeneous group of phenomena including non-genetic variations of the phenotype, morphs, domestic breeds, and geographic races. Before 1961, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, use of the term "variety" is not to be interpreted as an express statement of either subspecific or infrasubspecific rank and after 1960, a new name published as that of a "variety" is to be regarded as of infrasubspecific rank.
