This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: lateral line rather indistinct, ending below dorsal fin ray nos. 27-31 and just behind level of anus, dark vertical fins; otolith with rounded dorsal rim; larger specimens (> 35.0 cm) with pale head and dark brown body and no occipital and interorbital pores (Ref. 83453).
