Characterized by translucent pinkish body color with narrow scale margins; orange pink abdomen and most of head, merging with tapered pink stripe to middle caudal fin base; midline of snout with whitish stripe; median fins with faint spotting; second dorsal spine elongate and filamentous; all pectoral rays unbranched; fifth pelvic ray branched, 80% length of fourth ray; pelvic frenum and rudimentary basal membrane absent; longitudinal scale series 23-24; predorsal scales 4-5; no scales on cheek; single cycloid scale on upper opercle; depth of body 4.2-4.8 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Inhabits coastal reefs to about 30 meters depth, usually hovers near caves (Ref. 48637). Forms small to large mid-water aggregations, often upside down on ceilings of caves (Ref. 90102).
