Etymology: Stiphodon: Greek, stiphos, -eos, -oys = mass + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335); annieae: Named for "Annie", the first author´s wife (Ref. 100388).
Eponymy: Mrs Annie Keith is the senior author’s wife. He named this species after her for her patience and unfailing support during field trips in the Pacific islands. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 10. This species is distinguished by the following characters: pectoral rays 14; D2 with 9 segmented rays; premaxillary teeth 34-40; no scales on head and nape; head and jaw are long; typical colouration of males bright red, mottled with a blue pattern on the back (Ref. 100388).

This species was found in a clear, high gradient stream with rocky bottom and lives on the bottom of the river, on top of rocks. Assumed to be amphidromous (Ref. 100388).
