Etymology: Pinnichthys: Name formed Latin 'pinna' (feminine; fin) and 'ichthys' (Latinized form of the Greek acronym ichthus; fish); referring to the high number of fin rays in the second dorsal fin and anal fin of all species in the genus.; aimoriensis: Species name is an adjective formed from the proper noun 'Aimores', an indigenous warrior people from Espirito Santo, Bahia, and Minas Gerais in Brazil (Ref. 113825).

Found on the seafloor near the Peroa natural gas platform, with rhodoliths and other calcareous substrate (Ref. 113825). Also found in a moderately steep slope with short rock ledges, small caves and crevices. Collected on a fine sand and Halimeda rubble substrate in close proximity to an Ircinia sp. sponge and several ca. 1 m diameter boulders covered with encrusting algae and sponges (Ref. 129296). Mininum depth and maximum size for male from Ref. 113825. Maximum depth and maximum size for female from Ref. 129296.
