Etymology: Cambeva: Probably derived from the Tupi-Guarani, is a popular name for trichomycterid fishes in southern and south-eastern Brazil (Ref. 119381); grisea: Derived from the Latin word for grey, in reference to the predominant coloration of this species (Ref. 129458).

Vertebrae: 38 - 39. Distinguished from other species by the following set of characters: D 11 (ii + II + 7); A 9 (ii + II + 5); P 6 (I + 5); pelvic-fin rays 5 (I + 4); principal caudal-fin rays 13 (I + 11 + I); dorsal procurrent rays 14-16 (xiii-xv + I); ventral procurrent rays 8-12 (vii-xi + I); vertebrae 38-39; 13- 15 pleural ribs; anal-fin origin in vertical through anterior third of dorsal-fin base; anal and dorsal fins posteriorly placed relatively to vertebrae (dorsal-fin origin in a vertical through centrum of the 20th or 21st vertebra); anal-fin origin in vertical through centrum of 23rd or 24th vertebra. Colouration: pale brownish grey, sometimes with dark grey pigment coloration on the flank which are irregularly distributed (Ref. 129458).
