Etymology: Nothobranchius: Greek, nothos = false + Greek, brangchia = gill (Ref. 45335); iridescens: Name 'iridescens' from the Latin participial adjective deriving from the ancient Greek word 'iris', meaning 'rainbow', in reference to the colourful appearance of the males, containing different colours of the rainbow.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 16 - 17; Anal soft rays: 17 - 18. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: anal fin with irregular red-brown spots and stripes, creating two irregular submedial and medial bands and with broad yellow subdistal band; caudal fin with a slender light blue subdistal band, densely marked with irregular red spots, and narrow dark brown distinct distal margin; caudal peduncle length 153-161 in % of its depth; eye diameter 31-34% HL; and predorsal length 52.4-55.6% SL (Ref. 138275).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal; Cross section: oval.
This species inhabits a turbid pool, about 50 cm in depth, with margins partially overgrown by grass (Ref. 138275).
