Etymology: Austrolebias: Composed from Austro = the south + see under Lebias; ayoreode: Name 'ayoreode' in honor of the indigenous Ayoréode people, who historically occupied vast expanses of the northern Dry Chaco and in the area of the type-locality of this species.
