Etymology: Cambeva: Probably derived from the Tupi-Guarani, is a popular name for trichomycterid fishes in southern and south-eastern Brazil (Ref. 119381); panthera: Derived from the Greek word for panther, in allusion to the color pattern of larger specimens that exhibit coloration similar to the species of the felid genus Panthera (Ref. 129458).

Distinguished from other species by the following set of characters: D 11-12 (ii-iii + II + 7); A 9-10 (ii-iii + I-II + 5-6); dorsal-fin origin in a vertical through the centrum of the 18th or 19th vertebra; anal-fin origin in vertical just anterior to posterior dorsal-fin base end; P 7 (I + 6); pelvic-fin rays 5 (I + 4); principal caudal-fin rays 13 (I + 11 + I); caudal fin subtruncate; vertebrate 37; ribs 14; longer maxillary barbel reaching the middle of the pectoral-fin base; 10 or 11 opercular odontodes; 44-46 premaxillary teeth; 20-24 dorsal procurrent caudal-fin rays; 23-25 interopercular odontodes; 17.8-20.2 % SL caudal-fin length; 9.7-12.6 % SL pelvic-fin length. Colouration: presence of rounded brown spots with dark brown to black margin on the flank area in adult specimens (Ref. 129458).
