Freshwater; brackish; pelagic. Tropical; 10°N - 5°S, 94°E - 117°E (Ref. 189)
Western Central Pacific: Sarawak, Malaysia and western coast of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Also known from two specimens from Phuket, Thailand.

Max length : 28.4 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 124479); common length : 20.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 9822)
Dorsal spines (total): 0; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 80. Body tapering, belly rounded before pelvic fins, with 14 to 16 + 31 to 39 = 47 to 54 keeled scutes from isthmus to anus. Maxilla long, reaching to beyond pectoral fin base. Pectoral fin with 6 filaments; the unbranched fin rays longer than those of pelvic fin.
Presumably estuarine, like other Coilia species, but more data needed. Found in estuaries and tidal reaches of river (Ref. 12693). Marketed fresh, dried, dried-salted, or made into fish sauce or fish balls (Ref. 9822).
