This species is distinguished by the following: origin of dorsal fin above or anterior to mid of body; caudal fin only at the base with scales; an eye-like spot on the shoulder is absent or only weakly indicated as shadow; presence of a longitudinal black band on the posterior half of the body (from the vertical through the insertion of the dorsal fin to the end of caudal spot and iridescent on the upper part of the caudal peduncle) (Ref. 101436).
