Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16 - 17; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 16 - 18. Body reddish brown with patches on the cheeks and a black spot at the base of the tail. SL to 38 mm.

Occurs among mangroves (Ref. 1602). Also forms aggregations near surface of marine lakes and tidal streams (Ref. 90102).
