Short description Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics

Distinguished from congeners in Mediterranean basin by having the following combination of characters: 9-13 parr marks in adults; caudal fin slightly emarginate; 20-60 small ocellated spots on flank (smaller than eye), some black, some brownish red (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits streams in hilly areas and lowland in karstic resurgences. Occurs in clear waters around 10-20° C, usually with dense subaquatic vegetation. Feeds mainly on aquatic insects. Spawns on gravel bottom in shallow water. Attains a maximum size of up to about 40 cm SL. Threatened due to water abstraction, overfishing and stocking of non-native trouts (Ref. 59043).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01047 (0.00488 - 0.02245), b=3.03 (2.86 - 3.20), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this Genus-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.6   ±0.5 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Moderate vulnerability (39 of 100).
