Etymology: Cheilopogon: Greek, cheilos = lip + Greek, pogon = barbed, beard (Ref. 45335).

Issue
Considered mostly as a subpsecies of Cheilopogon pinnatibarbatus (Bennett, 1831) since the 1970s. Was rarely used at species rank, therefore is considered here as a provisionally accepted name, until there is more work conducted on the various subspecies of C. pinnibarbatus to fix their status.
