Etymology: Cheilodipterus: Greek, cheilos = lip + Greek, di = two + Greek, pteryx = fin (Ref. 45335).
Issue
Type locality: Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa, Sesoko I.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecology
Marine; reef-associated; depth range 1 - 20 m (Ref. 37816), usually 2 - 15 m (Ref. 90102). Tropical
Western Pacific: Japan south to Australia east to Solomon Islands.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 20.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 48635)
Dorsal spines (total): 6 - 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 8. Differs from C. artus by having darker stripes and fewer gill rakers, and from C. macrodon by having narrower dark stripes (Ref. 37816). Similar to C. heptazona, but lacking yellow on snout, and C. octolineatus, but without black tip on dorsal fin. Juveniles and sub-adults with large yellow area on caudal peduncle with a small black spot in its center (Ref. 48635).
Occurs in reefs over sand or mud bottoms. Solitary in caves to 20 m depth (Ref. 48635).
