Cichlidae (Cichlids) > Ptychochrominae
Etymology: Ptychochromis: Greek, ptyx, = fold + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); onilahy: Named after the basin in which the types were collected (Ref. 57663).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecology
Freshwater; demersal. Tropical
Africa: Madagascar.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 8.6 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 57663)
Dorsal spines (total): 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8 - 9; Vertebrae: 26 - 27. It is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a lachrymal plate that extends ventrally to cover a portion of the upper lip (Ref. 57663). Body deep and laterally compressed (Ref. 57663). Two inner rows of teeth in both upper and lower jaws (Ref. 57663). It has cycloid scales above the upper lateral line on the flanks (Ref. 57663). In preservative, the ground coloration is brownish to golden-brown, lighter ventrally, and all fins are brownish (Ref. 57663).
