Etymology: Zaireichthys: Composed form Zaire river + Greek,ichtys = fish; the habitat of this fish (Ref. 45335)dorae: Dedicated to Mrs Dora Machado, co-collector of the species (Ref. 11970).
Eponymy: Dora Machado, who collected the holotype, was the wife of zoologist António de Barros Machado (1912–2002). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Vertebrae: 37. Diagnosis: Zaireichthys dorae differs from all the other species of Zaireichthys in the relatively posterior position of the dorsal fin, which is 1.4 times further from the base of the caudal fin than from the snout, compared with 1.5-1.9 in Z. lacustris and 1.7-2.4 in all other species (Ref. 86935).
