Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 11; Anal soft rays: 9 - 12. This species is characterized by the following: body covered with rigid carapace except the caudal peduncle, pectoral, dorsal, and anal-fin bases, and around anus; carapace with 6 ridges, dorsolateral (start dorsal to the eyes and extending posteriorly to the level of the dorsal-fin origin), lateral, and ventrolateral ridges: dorsolateral ridges; lateral ridges (start in the region of the posterior edge of each pectoral fin and extend posteriorly to carapace); ventrolateral ridges (start below the pectoral-fin bases and running posteriorly to the terminus of the carapace); middle of the dorsolateral ridges with a pair of compressed, strong spines while the ventrolateral ridges with a corresponding but smaller pair of spines just ventral to the spines on the dorsolateral ridges, and these 4 spines are slightly curving posteriorly; along ventrolateral ridges, a series of low processes posterior to the strong spines. It is hexagonal in cross section and lacks a keel on the ventral surface of the carapace (Ref. 81167).
