Etymology: Knipowitschia: Because of N.M.Knipowitsch, a zoologist and Russian ichthyologist from the Academy of Sciences. Expeditions in "Pomor" and "Pervosvanniy" ships to Azov and Black sea (1898-1908).

Occurs in lowland water bodies (Ref. 26100); in clear, nearly stagnant, temperate, sometimes slightly brackish waters with abundant submerged vegetation and sand or mud bottom. It lives up to 2 years. Spawns in February-March; juveniles free swimming while adults are benthic. Feeds on chironomid larvae and small crustaceans. Threatened for habitat are largely drained and filled with garbage (Ref. 59043).
