Southwest Pacific: endemic to New Zealand and the Auckland Islands.

Occurs in intertidal algal beds, as well as wharves and pilings. Usually at depths less than 7.5 m. Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205). Males probably brooding at about 24-25 cm TL.
