Distinguished from congeners in Iceland by the following characters: coloration of flank silvery bluish, without parr marks, with paler spots (spawning males become brownish with yellowish spots); pectoral, pelvic and anal fins without conspicuous white anterior margin; snout conical, longer than eye diameter; mouth subterminal, upper jaw projecting only slightly (Ref. 59043).
Occurs in open waters. Feeds on zooplankton and insects. A few individuals are piscivorous and planktivorous (Ref. 59043).
