Dorsal soft rays (total): 33 - 35; Anal soft rays: 26 - 28; Vertebrae: 39 - 40. Anterior portion of dorsal fin comblike with tips of the first 5-7 dorsal fin rays free from membrane at their distal ends one-half to two-thirds length of ray in both males and females. Caudal fin 14-18 with 11 principal rays. Head depressed (depth 67% HL) and wide (wide 1.4 depth). Small mouth with cleft extending to vertical below nostril. Small eyes, 14.5% HL. Short gill slit, 1.7 time eye diameter; extending ventrally in front of pectoral fin ray 1 or 2. Widely-spaced chin pores. Body not humpbacked, with nearly horizontal dorsal profile.
