Etymology: Phyllonemus: Greek, phyhllon = leaf + Greek, nema = filament (Ref. 45335)brichardi: Named after P. Brichard, collector of the holotype (Ref. 47263).

Africa: endemic to Lake Tanganyika, only known from the type locality: eastern shore of the Ubwari Peninsula, Lake Tanganyika, DR Congo (Ref. 47263, 75075, 78218).

Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 1; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 6; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 7. Elongate body (Ref. 47263). Head longer than 1/3 of the standard length, 2 times as long as broad (Ref. 47263). Snout rectangular, 1.3 times as broad as long (Ref. 47263). Nasal barbel absent; long maxillary barbel, reaching the anterior end of the anal fin; outer mandibular barbel extremely long, measuring more than twice the head length and longer than the maxillary barbels, reaching the caudal fin base; inner mandibular barbel long, reaching the posterior end of the dorsal base (Ref. 47263). Toothless palate (Ref. 47263). Dorsal spine short, shorter than the dorsal fin base (Ref. 47263). Long adipose fin, which base is longer than the distance between the dorsal fin and the adipose fin (Ref. 47263). Pectoral spine more developed than the dorsal spine, but still small (Ref. 47263). Dorsal, ventral and anal fins moderate (Ref. 47263). The coloration of the preserved specimen is dark brown (Ref. 47263).
