Etymology: Lampanyctus: Greek, lampas, -ados = torch + Greek, nykte = night (Ref. 45335); wisneri: Named in honor of Robert L. Wisner, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, in recognition of his contributions to the systematics of myctophids and other oceanic fishes (Ref. 36121).

Pectoral fins completely lacking in subadult and adult stages; vestigial in small juveniles (less than 3 cm SL); fin rays present but buried in skin in larger juveniles (Ref. 36121).
