Etymology: Symbolophorus: Greek, symbolon, ou = mark, signal + Greek, pherein = to carry (Ref. 45335);  reversus: From the Latin reversus, past participle of revertere, meaning to turn back. This name refers to the reverse-concavity form of the luminous plates on the supracaudal gland of the males. These luminous plates are turned backward in position when compared t.
