Distinguished from all other species of Apistogramma by the combination of the following characters: 5 complete, intense vertical bars; a narrow lateral band; distinct spots on the back; small and mostly round caudal peduncle; a round, in males red marginated, caudal fin; extremely prolonged lappets of, especially, the prior part of the dorsal fin of males; distinct anal spot and only during breeding care, broadened distal part of the suborbital stripe of females (Ref. 55328).
