Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 9; Anal spines: 1 - 2; Anal soft rays: 24 - 26. This species is a member of the Betta pugnax group with the following characters: a comparatively deep-bodied species, body depth at dorsal-fin base 31.4-35.0 % of SL; differs from its congeners in having a head length of 30.0-33.6% of SL, caudal fin with transverse bars, presence of chin-bar and second postorbital stripe, A 26, lateral scales 29-31 (mode 30), lanceolate caudal fin, absence of a broad dark marginal band on anal or caudal fin (Ref. 78499).
Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); The type locality was described as a small river with current (0.4 m/s); ground formed by
gravel and in parts by sand. The fighting fishes were found at the banks, slower current , between roots and plants (Araceae). Water data as described: pH 5.8-6.3, 30-52 µS/cm, 23.3-
24.2 °C. Type specimens in February 2005 with pH 6.3, electric conductivity 51 µS/cm and water-temperature 25.5 °C (Ref. 78499).
