Etymology: Pictichromis: Name from Latin pictus meaning painted or colored, and Greek Chromis, a genus of pomacentrid, used as the stem for other fish genera; alludes to the bright live colorations of the included species (Ref. 81967);  dinar: Named for CV. Dinar, an exporting company of live fishes, corals, and other marine life from Indonesia..

The drop-off at the type locality starts at 8 m, the substratum leading to this consists of coral rubble, a typical habitat for species of Cirrhilabrus . Apparently, the two small angelfishes sought by the collectors at this area are Centropyge bicolor and Paracentropyge multifaciata (Ref. 82647). Also found in crevices and overhangs on steep outer reef slopes (Ref 90102).
