Dorsal spines (total): 4 - 6; Dorsal soft rays (total): 53 - 55; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 47 - 51; Vertebrae: 73 - 76. Belongs to the Macrognathus aculeatus species group but can be distinguished from all other Asian mastacembelids by having only 4-6 spines on dorsal fin (vs. 11-40). Differs further from all members of the Macrognathus aculeatus species group by having only 6-8 rostral tooth plates (vs. 9 in Macrognathus meklongensis to 55 in Macrognathus tapirus) and the details of color pattern (Ref. 83418).
